The Role Breastfeeding plays in our wellbeing - World Breastfeeding Week

Posted by Kerry Haynes, The Media Snug on

1st – 7th August sees World Breastfeeding Week celebrated all around the world with an aim of encouraging breastfeeding and improving the health of babies globally.

The theme for 2017 World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) is Sustaining Breastfeeding Together, which sees a number of organisations working together for the common good to promote the role that breastfeeding plays in our wellbeing.

Breastfeeding is a personal choice mum makes and is a topic that divides opinion. However, should you decide to breastfeed, it can give baby a healthy start in life and bring health benefits to you too. Breastmilk contains antibodies, vitamins and nutrients that will help fight off infections and allergies. For you as a mum, it may help you bond with baby with skin-on-skin touch, as well as helping burn the post pregnancy calories and can reduce your risk of ovarian cancer. It also gives you valuable time to sit quietly, relax and spend time with your newborn.

We asked Sarah Beeson MBE a former health visitor and author of first year parenting book Happy Baby, Happy Family and memoirs Our Country Nurse and The New Arrival her tips for relaxed breastfeeding and bonding with baby.

“Feeding takes time, so make the most of it. Get yourself set up with a drink, a snack, the remote control and your phone or an eBook all within reach. Place one comfy cushion behind your back, and a cushion to support your baby as well if you want to, and put your feet up – when else will you get the chance?!

Just before you put your baby on the breast, take a deep breath in and breathe out slowly and evenly. Count to ten, drop your shoulders away from your ears and relax. Say to yourself. ‘Each day I breastfeed is a great achievement and I’m doing something very special for my baby.’ Keep on adding an extra day and before you know it you’ll have been breastfeeding for weeks and then months. “

You can discover more breastfeeding and child and relationship advice during your baby’s first year in Sarah Beeson’s MBE parenting guide Happy Baby, Happy Family available in paperback, eBook and audiobook published by Thorsons.
